Lava Update Adventure, Big Island

Want to see some lava? We had quite an adventure to show you the expanding lava lake and fountaining going on at Volcanoes National Park right now.

Things to Know:
1. There are alot of people going to see the lava right now!
2. The parking lot and restrooms at the former Jaggar Museum, and the Uēkahuna west eruption viewing area are closed until further notice to protect a pair of native geese that are nesting in the area. (This is as of Fall 2021..get more updates here: https://www.nps.gov/havo/learn/nature/september-2021-eruption.htm
3. To actually see the lava you will need to walk down the Devastation Trail road for a mile. Flat and easy. There IS an outhouse bathroom at the trail head.
4. Be courteous and let folks in to also view the lava if there are dozens of other visitors standing with you.
5. Bring your patience. Sunset brings the hoards as people want to see the lava in the early evening. If you can, stay the night nearby, and go after 9 pm or before 6 am.

The lava lake continues to rise and you CAN see bursts of lava coming from the cinder cone right now. We never know how long these eruption cycles last, but this is pretty darn epic right now!
